English 19: Introduction to Literary Analysis (Spring 2022)

Do you love literature? Or maybe you want to improve your skills of close reading and interpretation? Then English 19 is the course for you. This introductory level class is designed to help you learn to enjoy and interpret literature. It is also the gateway course for an English major or minor.


In this course, we will read traditional and contemporary texts in four genres: short story, poetry, novel and drama and learn key terms and concepts of literary analysis. Throughout the semester, we will practice how to ask questions a text, to appreciate its aesthetic value and to understand its meanings.

Requirements:   Active participation in class discussions, group presentation, three short essays and three quizzes.
