Cal Poly Match Moved to Saint Mary’s Stadium | Christian Portillo

MORAGA, CALIF. - The Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Mustangs and Saint Mary’s Gaels were originally scheduled to play Saturday’s match at Cal Poly, but due to unplayable field conditions, the California Conference match will now be played at Saint Mary’s Stadium on Saturday at 1:00 P.M.

The #19 Mustangs defeated Santa Clara 50-19 on the road last week. Senior wing Ivy Adair, who is in his first year of playing rugby, won the D1A Rugby Player of the Week for his performance against the Broncos. He was not the only one who had a good game, as seven different Mustangs all scored tries.

Saint Mary’s had an impressive 27-12 win over BYU last week that catapulted them to the #1 spot on the D1A Top 20 Rankings. This marks the first time the Gaels have been in the #1 spot since they lost the national championship to Life University last year. The previously #3 ranked side in the country was able to top the Cougars with a solid defensive showing and with Dylan Audsley’s kicking prowess, as he scored 12 points of his own just on conversions and penalty goals.

The two sides have only met twice over the past two years. In 2015, the Gaels won on the road 48-10. Last year, Saint Mary’s won again by a similar score of 50-11 in the regular season finale. They would have met in the playoffs, but the Air Force eliminated the Mustangs on Saint Mary’s own Pat Vincent field to advance to the quarterfinals to play the Gaels the very next day.
