Men's Rugby 2019-2020 Roster - Payton Telea- IIalio

We asked Senior, Payton Telea - llalio a few questions about his career as a Gael.  Payton’s impact on the team was recognized early. His strength & brute force was a big part to winning the 2017 D1A National Championship Title.  That same year, he was selected as FloRugby’s Freshman of the year. Alex Goff wrote “Telea was a force for the Gaels as Saint Mary's won the DIA final. He was imposing in the scrum and played superbly in the loose, was solid on defense, and did all of that as a regular, weekly starter for the best team in the nation.”

“I am still a student of the game” says Telea-llalio. “I have grown to love this game more and more each time I step out on the field.”  He enjoys the comradery and the lifelong friendship of brothers that are gained through the suffering. He admires the volunteer coaches for their sacrifice and the time they set aside from family and work to coach at Saint Mary’s College.  He recognizes that they have genuine love for the game and each of the players.

The best advice Telea-llalio has for young players is, “Don’t be a victim to your circumstances. Find your why.”  He mentioned that there is different energy from this year’s squad. He likes to remind those young players that no matter what happens on the field or off, “We always vibin!” and need “Big Trust!” “Throughout the blood, sweat and tears, Saint Mary’s Men’s Rugby differs from any other school,”  Telea-llalio goes on to say. “It’s a privilege to be on the team.” One thing that surprises Telea-llalio is that each player, from #1 to #60, there is no hype, no tags. All you need to do is show up on Pat Vincent Field with hard hats ready to work.

Telea-llalio’s career as a Gael is noted as one of the greats.  Last summer, he, along with three other Gaels, represented Saint Mary’s College in the All-American match with each one running into the try line for the victory  against the All-Canadian team.

Thank you Payton, for all your hard work and dedication to Gael Rugby. Come watch him and the other Gaels on the field this Saturday, Feb 15th against BYU.  1:00pm at the Saint Mary’s Stadium.
