Returning Materials

Book drops will remain open, but as materials can carry viruses for several days, patrons are encouraged to keep items until the library reopens.  If you are out of the area, and need to mail items, here is how!

Holds, Renewals, Due Dates and Fines

All holds on our hold shelf will be held until the Library reopens.

All SMC Library items have had their due dates extended until June 5, 2020. (Check your account.)

Link+ items can be renewed six times. (Check your account.)

ILLiad item renewals need to be requested a week before the due date via

Do not worry if you get an email that your material is due back or overdue; once the Library reopens, returns will be backdated to 3/13/2020. All fines and fees from this date will be waived.

Textbook Access

The library is implementing a textbook scanning service to support online classes during this time.  Faculty who wish for their students to have access to specific chapters in a class textbook may fill out the textbook scanning request form. The Reserves Manager will check and process all requests submitted by 2 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and place them on your course Moodle page.

Many publishers are providing e-textbook access for free through May 24, 2020. Learn more

Link+ services are suspended due to member libraries being closed.

You may still request individual chapters and articles from ILLiad. If you need a book or article for your research that is not available, please contact your subject librarian

Access to Library Books for Research

The Document Delivery service will be open to all of the SMC community during the crisis.   Students, faculty, and staff can submit a request online using ILLiad; in the notes section, mention that the book is in the Library and make sure to indicate which pages you need scanned.

If you need access to an entire book for research, your subject librarian may be able to work with our acquisitions manager to order the e-book version and make it available through the Library catalog. Please contact your subject librarian to discuss options. Note: commercial textbooks are usually not available as e-books through the library.

See the Remote Library Resources guide for more information.

Librarians will work with faculty to make alternate arrangements for scheduled library research sessions. Please contact your subject librarian for more information.
