SMC Gaels Overtake Stanford 38-31

American Rugby News 1/17/2010

January 17, 2010 - Stanford gave #6 Saint Mary’s all it could handle in a tight Northern California League match with the Gaels eking out a 38-31 win. The Cardinal had SMC on the back foot for much of the game - Saint Mary’s led 21-19 at halftime. Second half tries by Tim Maupin, who scored two on the day, and Jake Holguin, along with a Matt Hensley conversion, iced the close result for St Mary’s. Stanford played well, the difference being a couple of late errors from which SMC capitalized. “An awful display of college rugby is what I witnessed Saturday at Stanford,” St Mary’s head coach Tim O’Brien told ARN. “I'd have to believe any possible sponsor of our college game who witnessed this 80 minutes of match play walked away reconsidering dipping into this 'emerging market'. A lack of technical skill and tactical competence was the theme of the day. “Our porous defense and lack of precision and care of the ball kept them under much pressure throughout the day. Stanford did a nice job pouncing on the many opportunities which came their way and should be commended.”
