SMC Senior, Brendan O'Meara was named co-captain for the 2009 Grizzlies
June 14, 2009-- On June 11th and June 13th Glendale, Colorodo hosted the Collegiate National All-Star Championships which featured six outstanding Saint Mary’s College Rugby players on the selective Pacific Coast Grizzlies team. The Grizzlies players, are selected from a competitive tryout composed of athletes from as far north as Washington and as far east as Utah.
Participating Saint Mary’s College forwards included Kyle Batten, Andrew Lee, and Andrew Cook while backs included Chad Clark, Blake McGahan and third-time member and Grizzly Co-Captain, Brendan O’Meara. Lead by coach Jonathan Griffen, the Grizzlies played two games finishing the weekend 1-1.
In the first game against the competitive Southern California Griffens, the Pacific Coast Grizzlies finished 26-37. Fly half Chad Clark and outside center Brenden O’Meara started and were followed by scrum half Blake McGahan, who replaced Shaun Davies of BYU after he was injured in the first half. During the game, Clark scored one try. Although this game marked the first loss for the Pacific Coast Grizzlies in four years, it was a match up of the two most competitive teams in the Collegiate National All-Star Championships.
The Pacific Coast Grizzlies finished their second game victorious over the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) 53-5. This starting lineup featured a majority of Saint Mary’s Gaels including Clark at scrum half, O’Meara at fly half, Cook at flanker and Batten at lock. In the second half, Lee came in at prop while McGahan relieved Clark at scrumhalf. Notably, Andrew Cook scored a try but it was called back.
