A professor and chair of the Sociology department, Martinelli focuses on contemporary and historical immigrants in her teaching, research and can address American political responses to immigration movements from present day to the 19th century.

Phylis MartinelliMartinelli is the author of the book "Undermining Race: Ethnic Identity in Arizona Copper Camps 1880-1920," which covers historical laws dealing with illegal immigration in Arizona.

She is also the co-founder of the Center for First Generation To College Studies, which examines the experiences of students who are the first in their families to attend college.
