Women of Influence: Maria Mejorado '78
Maria Mejorado, who has spent more than 30 years in the field of higher education, is an associate professor in the Bilingual/Multicultural Education Department at California State University, Sacramento. Mejorado’s passion for education blossomed at Saint Mary’s through her position as tutorial coordinator. She grew into a strong student leader and was the first Latina elected ASSMC president. After receiving a B.A. in English from SMC, Mejorado earned master’s in education from Harvard and a Ph.D. in educational policy from UC Davis.
At CSU Sacramento, Mejorado helps students from a variety of backgrounds acquire leadership skills and the strength to overcome adversity. She is also director of a GED program for agricultural workers. Mejorado says she is most proud of “making a life-changing decision to become a parent later in life” and advises women to never seize every opportunity for educational development, adding: “I believe in life-long learning and growing!”
