Saint Mary's Fall 2024 Nomination Application Due: Sep. 2, 2024 | Final Submission: Sep. 16, 2024

SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITY

  • An outright award of $6,000 to an individual scholar for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing in the humanities. 
  • Stipends normally support work during the summer months, but arrangements can be made for other times of the year.
  • In accordance with NEH guidelines, tenured or tenure-track faculty must be nominated by their institution to apply.  Saint Mary’s makes two nominations per year through an internal competition.
  • Adjunct faculty do not need a nomination and may move forward directly with an application.

SAINT MARY’S COLLEGE NOMINATIONS PROCESS

Saint Mary’s may nominate up to two tenured or tenure-track faculty members to submit applications for Summer Stipends.

How to apply for the Saint Mary's nomination

  • Prepare and submit a narrative, bibliography, and résumé following the instructions found in the NEH Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO)
  • Refer also to the review criteria on p. 18 of the NOFO.
  • Narrative.  3 page PDF.  Detailed instructions on pp. 11–13 of the NOFO. 
  • Work Plan.  1 page PDF.  Detailed instructions on p. 13 of the NOFO. 
  • Bibliography.  1 page PDF.  Detailed instructions on pp. 13–14 of the NOFO.  
  • Résumé.  2 page PDF.  Detailed instructions on p. 14 of the NOFO. 
  • Submit your documents to the Office of Research (egallagher@stmarys-ca.edu) by 11:59 pm on September 2, 2024.

Review the following in preparation to apply to the NEH, should you be nominated by Saint Mary's:

  • Notify two prospective references that you will need letters if you are nominated (pp. 14–15 of the NOFO).  Let them know that the deadline for their letters will be October 11, 2024
  • Familiarize yourself with the NEH Research Misconduct Policy.
  • Review the information on pp. 15–16 of NOFO regarding registration for a Grants.gov account. 
  • Please contact the Office of Research director at egallagher@stmarys-ca.edu with any questions related to the process. 

Nomination application review

An ad-hoc committee of two humanities faculty, the dean of liberal arts, and the director of the Office of Research will evaluate the applications and select up to two nominees based on:

  • The application’s alignment with NEH application requirements, pp. 9–11 of NOFO; and
  • The application’s alignment with NEH review criteria, p. 18 of NOFO.

Two Saint Mary's nominees will be announced in September 2024. 

What to do to prepare an application

  • Prepare your application according to the NEH Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO).  Read the entire NOFO.
  • Contact the Office of Research director at egallagher@stmarys-ca.edu for help in interpreting the NOFO as needed, and for assistance in registering in Grants.gov.
  • Register for Grants.gov early in your application preparation process.
  • As soon as you know you will be applying, contact your reference letter-writers to request their support.  Confirm with your references what is the best e-mail address for them.  You will be asked to include one e-mail address for each reference in your application package.
  • Note that the institutional nominating official for tenured and tenure-track nominees will be the dean of the School of Liberal Arts.

TIMELINE FOR 2024-2025 SUMMER STIPEND APPLICATIONS

  • Sep. 2:  Tenure-track and tenured faculty submit nomination applications to the Office of Research at egallagher@stmarys-ca.edu
    • NOTE:  Adjunct faculty applicants bypass the nomination process and move forward with preparing an application.
  • Sep. 6:  Saint Mary’s announces its two nominees for the 2024 NEH Summer Stipend competition.
  • Sep. 6:  Faculty applicants set appointment with Elizabeth Gallagher at egallagher@stmarys-ca.edu to go over how to prepare the application and how to use Grants.gov. 
  • Sep. 9:     Faculty applicants must register with Grants.gov.  Recommended registration date:  Sep. 9
  • Sep. 18:  Faculty applicants submit application through Grants.gov by this date.  Recommended submission date: Sep. 16.
  • Sep. 30:     NEH requests reference letters and confirmations of nomination. 
  • Oct. 11:  Reference letters and confirmations of nomination must be submitted by this date.
  • April 2025:     Notification to applicants of funding decisions.
