Saint Mary's Nomination Application Due:  August 27, 2019 | Final Submission: September 25, 2019

SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITY

  • An outright award of $6,000 to an individual scholar for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing in the humanities. 
  • Recipients may hold other research grants supporting the same project during this time. Stipends normally support work during the summer months, but arrangements can be made for other times of the year.
  • In accordance with NEH guidelines, full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty must be nominated by their institution to apply, and Saint Mary’s may make up to two such nominations per application cycle.
  • Faculty who are not tenure-track may apply on their own without taking part in the nomination process.

SAINT MARY’S COLLEGE NOMINATIONS PROCESS

Saint Mary’s may nominate up to two tenured or tenure-track faculty members to submit applications for Summer Stipends.

 

How to prepare and submit your application for nomination

  • Prepare the following application components according to NEH guidelines, pages 9–12. Use PDF format.
  • Project narrative (up to 3 pages)
  • Bibliography (1 page)
  • Résumé (2 pages)
  • If required (for editions, translations, databases, or visual projects), include Samples (1 page)
  • Submit your application to the Office of Research (egallagher@stmarys-ca.edu) by Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 5 PM.
  • Review the following in preparation to apply to the NEH, should you be nominated:
  • Notify two prospective references that you will need letters if you are nominated (guidelines, page 12), and there is a short turn-around time from submission (Sep. 25) to the deadline for letters (Oct. 17). 
  • Familiarize yourself with the NEH Research Misconduct Policy.

 

Application review

An ad-hoc committee of two humanities faculty, the dean of liberal arts, and the director of the Office of Research will evaluate the applications and select up to two nominees based on:

  • The application’s alignment with NEH project narrative requirements, pages 9–10 of the guidelines; and
  • The application’s alignment with NEH review criteria, page 8 of the guidelines.

Nominations will be announced Sept. 6, 2019. 

 

What to do if you are nominated to apply

  • Prepare / edit your application according to the NEH guidelines.  Contact Office of Research staff for advice.
  • Set up your Grants.gov account by Sep. 11.  Faculty nominees are responsible for final submission to NEH through Grants.gov, but Office of Research staff are available to assist.
  • Confirm with your references and include one e-mail address for each reference in your application package.
  • Review the Grants.gov application package and process.
  • The institutional nominating official will be the dean of the School of Liberal Arts. She will receive an e-mail message by Oct. 4, 2019 asking for confirmation of your status as nominee. 

 

TIMELINE

Aug. 27, 2019:    Faculty submit application for nomination to the Office of Research at egallagher@stmarys-ca.edu.

Sep. 6, 2019:     Saint Mary’s announces its two nominees for 2019 NEH Summer Stipend competition.

Until Sep. 25:    Prospective applicants may direct questions to Research Division staff at 202-606-8200 or stipends@neh.gov.

Sep. 11, 2019:     Faculty applicants must register with Grants.gov by this date.  Recommended registration date:  Sept. 9. 

Sep. 25, 2019:     Nominated faculty submit application through Grants.gov by this date. Recommended submission date: Sept. 23.

Oct. 4, 2019:   NEH requests reference letters and confirmations of nomination by this date. 

Oct. 17, 2019:      Reference letters and confirmations of nomination must be submitted by this date.

Oct.  2019:         Peer review panels take place.

Mar. 2020:         Meeting of National Council on the Humanities, followed by notification to applicants of funding decisions.

May 1, 2020:      Successful applicants receive award documents by e-mail.
