Early Graduation

For students graduating in December or January.

*Please note that graduation and commencement are different. Graduation is degree completion while commencement is the ceremony

If you plan on graduating in December (after your Fall grades are posted) or graduating in January (after your JanTerm grades are posted), here are some helpful steps:

  • If you are graduating early, no additional paperwork is needed. We will process your graduation status once all of your final grades are submitted.
  • Make sure your JanTerm requirement is complete. If you plan on petitioning a JanTerm, you may fill out a special action petitionPlease note that JanTerms are not waived because early graduation is possible, a special action petition must be submitted and approved.
  • You must also complete 17 upper division credits and 36 institutional credits.
  • Once your final grades are submitted, it will take approximately 2 weeks to process your graduation status and mail your diploma.
  • Even if you are graduating early, you must apply for commencement. You will receive an email with commencement information in late November from the Registrar's Office.
  • If you would like to confirm your early graduation status, first check with your advisor and then you may meet with someone in the Registrar's Office to confirm.
