COVID-19 Campus Update: March 23, 2020

SMCReturn to COVID-19 Coronavirus Update Page

March 23, 2020

Saint Mary’s continues to respond to the coronavirus public health crisis by providing academic support for remote instruction for SMC students, technology services for faculty, and updates for the campus community. In addition to the recent message from President James Donahue on Saint Mary’s efforts to address the crisis, the College’s Coronavirus (COVID) Information & Resources page includes updated FAQs with information on virtual/online learning at SMC, the impact of the county and state orders affecting the campus, living arrangements for students during remote instruction, and more.

The updated Remote Advising Resources webpage features extremely helpful information, documents, and guidance for faculty for connecting with and supporting their advisees remotely.  Another resource for professors is the new Faculty Governance Academic Senate COVID-19 Response page, which provides updates on the Senate’s work to develop interim academic policies. The page includes a form for faculty to submit additional items for Senate consideration.

Also, a new update from Chief Human Resources Officer Laurie Panian offers clarity on guidelines for managers working with departments and teams during this time, new information about state and federal regulations that have changed to provide greater flexibility and coverage for employees that need to take leave, or have a reduction in hours and tips for working virtually.

Additional efforts include the implementation of enhanced security measures by the Department of Public Safety and Transportation, such as limiting the access of non-SMC community members to the College campus with new signage, patrols, and controlled access at the front gate.

Saint Mary’s Facilities Services continues its focus on cleaning and sanitizing occupied buildings including public places, dining areas, and kitchens, the College Chapel, common areas such as the Arcade, and academic areas designated for remote instruction and study rooms. The Joseph Alioto Recreation Center and Library have also been cleaned, sanitized, and both are currently closed and locked until further notice.

The College continues to examine and develop interim policies and provide guidance as a result of the COVID-19 public health crisis. Below are some of the areas under review and the office or campus leader who is charged with following up on the topic.
