Saint Mary's College Named to National Leadership Team
Saint Mary's to participate in national initiative to promote personal and social responsibility among undergraduates
MORAGA, Calif. (Jan. 19, 2007) - Saint Mary's College of California has been selected by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) as one of 18 institutions of higher learning to participate in a two-year project aimed at promoting personal and social responsibility among undergraduates.
Saint Mary"s College was named to the Core Commitments Leadership Consortium, a national initiative to imbue students with a sense of ethics, integrity and social responsibility. The schools in the Consortium will collaborate with one another and provide a model for how others can incorporate these principles into the undergraduate experience.
The program is aimed at persuading students to help solve social problems and against engaging in such behaviors as binge drinking and plagiarism.
The AAC&U received 128 applications from colleges and universities to participate in the program. In its proposal titled "Walk the Talk, Saint Marys demonstrated how the college integrates social justice and civic engagement into its curriculum and student life, including public service internships, campus-wide dialogues and community building projects through its Catholic Institute for Lasallian Social Action.
Each of the 18 Consortium members will receive a $25,000 award and commit $25,000 in matching funds over two years to advance educational opportunities that promote personal and social responsibility.
AAC&U has identified student engagement with issues of personal and social responsibility as a crucial component of a contemporary liberal education.
