Jackie Burrell, the Bay Area News Group's food editor stopped by the chemistry lab of SMC professor Michelle Shulman recently. Burrell wanted to learn more about Shulman's annual Jan Term course "How Baking Works: A Tasty Way to Explore Science."
The visit resulted in the news story "St. Mary's puts the chemistry in baking," which appeared in the Time Out section of several Bay Area News Group outlets, including the Contra Costa Times, Oakland Tribune and San Jose Mercury News.
Shulman, who chairs Saint Mary’s Chemistry department and has taught the course for a couple of years, was interviewed about her engaging approach in the science lab that makes chemistry accessible and fun for her students. "I love to bake," Shulman says in he article. "And I pick things I have an interest in, hoping it transfers to the students, excites them, interests them and makes chemistry approachable."
