LAB & Our Mission

A laboratory for life after graduation. A bridge from the Liberal Arts to a meaningful professional life. A Liberal Arts Bridge to the first job, the next thing, and the future.

LAB incorporates many components traditionally offered by career centers and professional schools, but in order to best serve our majors, it also focuses on the distinctive strengths and needs of Liberal Arts majors, in the context of the College’s broader mission, which is also shaped by Catholic and Lasallian traditions. Through LAB, we can pay special attention to the interest many liberal arts majors have in working in the non-profit and public spheres as well as the private sector. We want to help interested students find their way to personal and professional opportunities in social justice and community-focused work. LAB will also include attention to navigating diverse and marginalized identities in the job search and workplace and help participants consider both dominant and alternative ways to embody a professional identity in diverse contexts and fields. LAB advances our commitment to prepare students for meaningful professional lives, and it aligns with Saint John Baptist de La Salle’s founding vision for a holistic education that is “human and Christian,” practical as well as intellectual, and conducive to social mobility as well as to personal and societal transformation.
