Cool Cats
The School of Science inaugural Fletcher Jones Lecture, coordinated by Professor Michael Marchetti, debuted on March 13, with a lecture on “Cool Cats: Mountain Lions & Bobcats in the urban areas of Southern California” by Seth Riley, a wildlife ecologist with the National Park Service in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
BAD Math Day
Ellen Veomett (Mathematics) hosted the 2012 Bay Area Discrete Math Day on the Saint Mary’s campus on November 17. BAD Math Day is a one-day meeting aimed at facilitating communication between researchers and graduate students of discrete mathematics around the San Francisco Bay Area. View the schedule.
Pi Day – 3.14159
The Math department celebrated Pi Day on March 14 with a barrage of shaving cream pies hurled in good fun at our obliging Saint Mary’s professors. The event was an observance of Pi Day, a celebration of the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.
Science Majors Career Night
At a Science Majors Career Night on March 19, hosted by the Career Center, five School of Science graduates returned to campus to talk about their careers and the educational paths they took to get there. Thanks to our panelists—Heather Day ’05, Doris Hernandez ’02, Brian Kincaid ’96, Gregory Smith ’87 and Jarrod Willis ’99—for helping the next generation of Gaels!
SMC Hosts Psychology Conference
The annual Western Psychology Conference for Undergraduate Research and poster session was hosted by the Department of Psychology, coordinated by Mary True, on April 20.
