Sarah V’s synopsis:
By far my personal choice for this award, and not just because the author has a great first name. A riveting look behind the scenes in an industry that is so much more than just high school friends and fancy photos of brunch. This book, seemingly about one particular social medium you may not even use, was really a tale of the "attention economy" and big tech's simultaneous sprint and long game approaches to keeping your attention longer and making massive amounts of money while doing so (and potentially changing society as we know it). In fact, Frier provided so much foundational insight, when Twitter introduced their "Fleets" feature, it was almost laughably predictable to anyone who has read this book. A Bay Area-based tech journalist, Frier has both the connections and the accessible writing talent to carefully research and engagingly tell this story.
