SEBA Students and Alumni Volunteer at Habitat for Humanity East Bay
On Saturday, July 23, 2011, Saint Mary's College School of Economics and Business Administration students and alumni gathered with 20 volunteers from local organizations at Habitat for Humanity East Bay. Saturday marked the end of the 11-month term (1700 hours) for the AmeriCorps crew leaders at the new construction site on 81st Street in Oakland. As crew leaders Mark Kilroy and Suzanna Pho reflected on their terms, they said they found the experience "a practical application of the knowledge we acquired in college." It also "allowed us to navigate how to work best with a range of personalities and skill sets while understanding our own limitations."
The School of Economics and Business Administration volunteers also found the experience rewarding. Rene Gutierrez, a current Professional MBA student, was humbled working next to Francine Kakos, a grandmother, who was contributing 500 hours of sweat equity to give her grandchildren, ages 14 and 16, a better life. This August, they will be moving out of their one-room apartment and into their new three-bedroom home, or as she refers to it "her mansion."
The School of Economics and Business Administration appreciates all of the students and alumni that continue to serve with Saint Mary's College and positively impact our community. For a list of upcoming serve events, visit www.smcbusinessalumni.com/serve.
