SMC Profs Take the Stage at the National Women’s Studies Association Conference

Celebrating Roseanne Quinn's NWSA award as Feminist Change Agent, with Professor Denise Witzig, WaGS. Hilton Hotel, S.F., 11-16-19.Saint Mary’s College was well-represented at last week’s National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) annual conference in San Francisco, which ran from Nov. 14 to 17. Founding Director of SMC’s Center for Women and Gender Equity (CWGE) Roseanne Quinn received the group’s Feminist Change Agent award. In addition, several SMC faculty members served as presenters and panel organizers.

“The NWSA conference gathers the top Women’s and Gender Studies scholars from across the nation, and it is an honor to have so many SMC faculty represented,” said Director of SMC’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program Myrna Santiago. “We are a tiny program, but we have a big impact!”

Santiago nominated Quinn, who is currently a professor in English and Women’s Studies at DeAnza College, for the award based on the work she did at SMC from 1999 to 2002. “Professor Quinn deserves this award for the tireless dedication to students she demonstrated during her tenure at Saint Mary’s and the inspiration she became for young women working hard to make the College a welcoming place for women,” said Santiago.

Associate Professor Raina León (KSOE), Professor Denise Witzig (WaGS), Professor Emily Klein (English, WaGS, Ethnic Studies), and adjunct Professor Suzanne Schmidt (JCL, Comm, WaGS, and Ethnic Studies) presented at the conference. Sharon Sobotta, the director of the Center for Women and Gender Equity, attended the workshops for directors of women resource centers. Please see below for presentations.
