SMC to Honor Philippines Secretary of Education Brother Armin Luistro

Br. Armin Luistro, Education Secretary of the PhilippinesThe Secretary of the Department of Education for the Republic of the Philippines Brother Armin Luistro, FSC, will receive an honorary doctoral degree as the guest of honor at Saint Mary’s College of California’s annual De La Salle Week Convocation in the College Chapel.

Held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014, the Convocation is the centerpiece of a weeklong celebration of the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of teachers, founder of the Christian Brothers, our Lasallian heritage and mission. During the campus-wide commemoration, Saint Mary’s students, Christian Brothers, faculty, and staff come together to increase awareness of, and celebrate, the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle.

"Brother Luistro is a remarkable individual who is recognized internationally as a dynamic leader in higher education," said Saint Mary's President James Donahue."His devotion to creating educational opportunities for young people in the Philippines, and demonstrated leadership as president of the De La Salle University System and Brother Provincial of the District of the Philippines reflects an inspiring religious commitment and remarkable qualities an educator and as an administrator. We are extremely proud to honor him."

Luistro earned his bachelor of arts in philosophy and letters from De La Salle University in Manila. He later returned to the institution for graduate study, where he earned a master of arts degree in religious education and a master of arts degree in religious education and values formation. Luistro would go on to earn a doctorate in educational management from the University of Saint La Salle, Bacolod City and a doctorate of humane letters from LaSalle University in Philadelphia. He pursued further graduate study, earning a third postgraduate degree, a doctorate of pedagogy, from the Angeles University Foundation in Angeles City, Philippines.

Brother Luistro's many accomplishments in higher education include service as president of the De La Salle University System, Brother Provincial of the Philippines, education committee co-chair for the UNESCO National Commission in the Philippines and president of the Southeast Asian Ministers Education Organization Council. Additionally, he has served on numerous national and international educational associations, councils and boards.

In addition to the Convocation honoring Brother Luistro, the College will celebrate the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle with a weeklong schedule of activities, including community masses, symposiums, a gathering to view a re-broadcast of the canonization ceremony of Pope John Paul XXIII and Pope John Paul II, film screenings and special presentation on the crisis in Syria by Nobel Peace Prize nominee Mother Agnes Mariam.
