SMC Winning Streak is Upended by Davis

January 23, 2010 - ARN, The Northern California Conference has been thrown wide open with a big upset. #16 UC Davis upended #5 St Mary’s 24-11 in the ARN Game of the Week. Atrocious conditions caused by this week’s unprecedented winter storms that pounded California weren’t enough to slow down the Aggies, who outscored the Gaels by three tries to one. The UCD forwards set up the win with their outstanding play on the day. Davis also defended stoically in the second half to push back against SMC’s offensive forays. Saint Mary’s was caught off guard on defense a couple of times and on both occasions UCD turned the advantage into points. “It was a very good result for us, we’re very pleased,” UC Davis head coach Andy Malpass told ARN. “Our whole philosophy this year is one game at a time.” UCD flanker Sam Shackleford (2) and Cody Moody were the try-scorers. Tyler Harrison added the rest with a penalty and two conversions. Eightman Robert Meeson was named Man-of-the-Match. “Davis is a very well-balanced team,” added St Mary’s head coach Tim O’Brien. “They’re the best balanced team next to Cal in northern California.”
