A Safe and Healthy Spring Break

Dear Saint Mary’s Students,

It is hard to believe that spring break is already here.  This message is written with the utmost care and concern for you and your health and safety.  We know this will not feel like a normal break, given the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and state and county orders regarding social distancing.  During this challenging time and new normal that we are all experiencing, we hope that you can enjoy your days off while making your health and safety a priority.

Here are some important safety tips and guidance to keep in mind in order to keep you and everyone around you safe and as we continue to adapt to the ever-changing landscape presented by this pandemic:

  1. Follow Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent order that all individuals living in the State of California must stay home except for urgent or essential needs.
  2. Review your local area Public Health Guidance. Stricter social distance requirements for Contra Costa County were issued on March 31, 2020, and remain in effect until at least May 3, 2020.  Specific updates for Contra Costa County can be found here.
  3. Put differently, practice “Distant Socializing” by using technology to stay connected to friends and loved ones!
  4. Be aware of travel restrictions.  Counties and states across the U.S. have imposed orders restricting travel and public gatherings.  Visit this CDC link for travel alerts and advisories.  Additionally, on March 31, the U.S. State Department issued a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory, warning U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19.
  5. Do not risk your health or that of your family members - do not host or attend parties.  Ways to prevent COVID-19 and take care of your health can be found here.
  6. Remember that if you are living on-campus, you cannot have guests over.

Here are friendly reminders of your campus resources:

While you are sheltering in place, please take the time to see what resources and virtual programs we have available for you to use and stay connected:

  • For Academic Resources click here
  • Check out the Spring 2020 Virtual Engagement and Virtual Wellness programs sponsored by Student Life offices here.
  • The Code of Student Conduct and other policies/procedures for all students can be found in the Student Handbook here.
  • For Other Resources and COVID-19 Related Updates from the College click here.

It is difficult not to see the campus teeming with students from my office window.  In Lasallian spirit, please know that you are a valued part of our Saint Mary’s community.  I know that the more we practice social distancing to help flatten the curve of this pandemic, the sooner we will be able to bring our campus community back together.  Stay safe and find some time to rejuvenate and re-energize so you can return online and finish the semester strong! For general questions related to the College’s response to the COVID-19 crisis, call or email: (925) 631-5500; covid-19_information@stmarys-ca.edu

Take good care during your spring break.
