D.I.R.T.

Dismantle, Immerse, Reflect, Transform

Since January 2002, students have had the option, during Jan Term, to participate in service trips under the title “D.I.R.T.” - (Dismantle, Immerse, Reflect, Transform). DIRT sends students into situations of extreme poverty and challenges them to collaborate with host communities to address a chosen quality-of-life issue. More than just service learning trips, the course requires the students to participate in daily reflections that look beyond just treating the problems and instead seek out the larger social, economic and environmental conditions that led to the current condition. These observations are then explored further to understand the systemic changes needed to result in more sustainable outcomes for the benefit of the host community and surrounding region, and even communities at large.
