Saint Mary's College of California announces it has achieved a Fair Trade Status designation. Saint Mary's received the designation from Fair Trade Colleges & Universities, an initiative by Fair Trade Campaigns, a national collective of social justice institutions, such as Catholic Relief Services, Fair Trade Federation, Fair Trade USA and Green America, that are committed to increasing fairness and sustainability in global trade. The College is currently the only institution of higher education in Northern California to have received the distinction.
In the Contra Costa Times Local News section, a prominent front page photograph of
Saint Mary's is listed as one of the best colleges in the nation in the Princeton Review's annual guidebook "The Best 378 Colleges: 2014 Edition." The review says Saint Mary's is one of the best institutions for undergraduate education in the country, citing its academic rigor, small class sizes, student access to professors, quality of life for students and its commitment to sustainability. Only about 15 percent of the nation's 2,500 four-year colleges and only four colleges outside the USA are profiled in the book.
While the acknowledgement is brief, the San Francisco Chronicle story "College Hill was original St. Mary's home" about the hills of San Francisco attributes the moniker of the College Hill neighborhood, also know Bernal Heights, to Saint Mary's, which opened its doors 150 years ago in the area.
