KCBS Interviews Biology Prof. Chandrasekaran About FDA Probe Into Energy Drink

KCBS news radio interviewed Saint Mary's Biology Professor Vidya Chandrasekaran about the current FDA probe into the energy drink Monster. The Food and Drug Administration launched an investigation into the energy drink after five deaths were attributed to consumption of the highly caffeinated beverage.

BAD Math Day (Bay Area Discrete Math Day)

Bay Area Discrete Math Days are one-day meetings aimed at facilitating communication between researchers and graduate students of discrete mathematics around the San Francisco Bay Area.  These days happen semi-annually and strive to create an informal atmosphre to talk about discrete mathematics.

SUMMER RESEARCH STUDENT POSTER PRESENTATIONS

The 2012 Summer Research Program included 15 students (and faculty mentors) whose research applications were selected based on the potential for the best research.  After 10 weeks of diligent work, the students have transferred their research experiences in the lab to posters demonstrating their research findings.  The Dean and Chairs of the School of Science will judge the work and the top three posters representing the best research will be awarded.

San Jose Mercury News Profiles Jan Term Science of Baking Course

Jackie Burrell, the Bay Area News Group's food editor stopped by the chemistry lab of SMC professor Michelle Shulman recently. Burrell wanted to learn more about Shulman's annual Jan Term course "How Baking Works: A Tasty Way to Explore Science." 

The visit resulted in the news story "St. Mary's puts the chemistry in baking," which appeared in the Time Out section of several Bay Area News Group outlets, including the Contra Costa Times, Oakland Tribune and San Jose Mercury News.
