Dear Parents
I Received your letter to night and I was very glad to hear from you and to hear that you were well and enjoying good health as leaves me in at the present Capt. Stowell is a going to make out orders to draw the State pay just as soon as he makes out the order I will send it to you it is a getting to be very pleasant weather here now I received the cake that that you sent me all right it made me think of home I tell you I gave all the boys in our tent a peice and they all pronounced it tip top they said it was as good cake as they ever tasted of is John Petty dead[?] I think he died awful sudden how does mary take it[?] Poor girl I should think that she would feel very bad she is a good girl and she ought to have a good Protector now I pity her from the bottom of my heart I should like to see gerty to night Father every time I look at your picture it fairly makes me cry to think what an ungrateful son I have been to you there is plenty of Rot gut in our Regiment but God knows I will keep my promise to my mother that is I will not tuch a drop but I must stop for this time tell gerty buba Forrest thinks of her night and day kiss her for me my best love and Respect to you Father & Mother Kiss all the children for me this from your Affectionate Son
