The Good Person of Setzuan

When a delegation of gods travels to earth to find a “good person” they discover Shen Te of Setzuan, a kind and selfless soul. They reward her with a small fortune in gold, which she uses to establish a tobacco shop, hoping to use her business revenue to fund more charitable acts. But prosperity creates unforeseen challenges as love and goodness are pitted against self-interest and survival.

Bertolt Brecht's The Good Person of Setzuan. Set in an imagined China of the 1930s, this modern parable asks whether compassion and generosity can survive in a dog-eat-dog society built around labor, profit, and self-interest. Professor Daniel Larlham, new faculty in Performance and Theatre Studies, directs.

The Saint Mary's production features Tony Kushner's adaptation of Brecht's script, and mixes broad comedy, bold physicality, and live music to breathe new life into this classic by one of the most distinctive and radical voices of 20th century theatre.
