Loma Prieta Anniversary: A Reminder of Emergency Notifications and Preparations

LiveSafe logoOn the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake, Saint Mary's reminds you to practice earthquake safety, build an emergency kit (bug out bag), and create a plan.  Attached are recommendations for your "bug out bag" from the Lamorinda CERT, The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program helps train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities.

One of the most important parts of any plan is being able to receive messages and alerts from first responders.  The sooner information is received, the more time we have to act.  We have a number of methods of receiving information besides LiveSafe that I encourage everyone to utilize.  When it comes to emergencies, redundancy is important.

First, Contra Costa County has a community warning system (CWS).  If you are in a predefined zone (Saint Mary's College) that needs to be alerted from the county, the CWS will call every connected landline and call all registered cell phones.  Please take a moment to visit https://cwsalerts.com/  and register your cell phone and up to three addresses.

Nixle is another tool used by local law enforcement to provide information on police activity and any other information sent to the City of Moraga.  Once subscribed, you can choose not only Moraga's zip code, but any zip code you would like to receive alerts.  The link for Nixle is https://www.nixle.com/.

Finally, the State of California has just released an earthquake alert app called MyShake. The system uses ground motion sensors from across the state to detect earthquakes before humans can feel them and will notify Californians so that they can "Drop, cover and hold on" in advance of an earthquake. Please consider taking a look at this application by going to https://myshake.berkeley.edu/

If you have any questions about earthquake preparedness, please do not hesitate to contact my office at mpn6@stmarys-ca.edu or at 925-631-8097.

Thank you.
