The Transformational Conversation

An eight-step guide to addressing a problematic topic in a healthy, respectful way.

1) Begin by making an observation. "I have noticed..." or "It seems like..."

2) Share a feeling. "It makes me feel as though..." or "I am worried because..."

3) Share mutual perspectives and responsibilities. "Do I have the right impression?" and "I know I have contributed by..."

4) Embrace the quiet. Chances are this conversation is an important one, give the other person some silent, uninterrupted time to process what is being said. 

5) Explore consequences. "If this continues..." or "Long-term this could..."

6) State ideal outcomes. 

7) Commit to action. 

8) Transform.
