Alums of the School of Economics and Business Administration were well represented at the 2013-2014 Alumni Awards banquet on April 5. Congratulations to Garth Flint ’63, Economics, for being named Alumnus of the Year, Jeanne DeMatteo ’83, Accounting, for winning the Saint John Baptist De La Salle award, and Michael Clothier for being named the Gael of the Last Decade.
Garth Flint ’63 Economics
The Alumnus of the Year award is given to the alumnus who has made a significant contribution to his professional field and/or has demonstrated consistent service to the College, exemplifying the spirit and dedication of the Saint Mary’s College graduate. Flint’s accomplished career in the financial services industry, as well as his continued service to the College, both as a dedicated alumnus and as a parent of two Gaels, has earned him this year’s honor.
Flint is the CEO and Co-Founder of Beacon Pointe Advisors which works with many leading organizations within their industries and provides guidance to clients through all cycles of the market. The ultimate aim of Beacon Pointe is safeguarding the best interests of each client.
From 1996 to 2006 Flint was a valued member of the SEBA advisory board, and in 1997 he and his wife established the "Mollie Flint Rosing Endowed Scholarhship for Women's Basketball." Currently a College Trustee, he plays a key role in various fundraising endeavors. Flint is a decorated Vietnam verteran who serves on the boards of the St. Francis Medical Center Foundation and Boys Hope Girls Hope of Southern California.
Jeanne DeMatteo ’83, Accounting
The Saint John Baptist de La Salle Award is presented to a member of the faculty or staff who has, over a period of years, demonstrated a personal commitment to the students of Saint Mary’s College above and beyond their employee responsibilities. On the stength of her sterling reputation within the Saint Mary’s community, DeMatteo is this year's selection.
For the past 18 years Jeanne DeMatteo has served the College as a devoted employee and donor. Currently the assistant vice president for finance and controller, her understanding of the College’s mission shines through in her passion for Saint Mary’s. In 2010 DeMatteo was named one of the College’s “40 Most Influential Alumnae.” DeMatteo's devotion to the College is nearly unmatched. She has made a gift to Saint Mary's every year since graduation and is a longtime holder of men's basketball season tickets.
Michael Clothier ’06 EMBA
A valued member of the Graduate Business Alumni Committee since 2006, Michael Clothier was named this year’s Gael of the Last Decade winner. The Gael of the Last Decade is awarded to an alumnus who graduated within the last 10 years from the year of the award, this prize recognizes individuals who have ongoing and noteworthy support of the current students and recent alumni of Saint Mary’s College and/or his or her local community.
Clothier, the director of analytics at Advertising.com, was awarded this honor for his model alumni volunteerism and regularly contributions to the recruitment and networking efforts of the School of Economics and Business Administration. Clothier is instrumental for a number of events including Dine with Alums, the Executive Speaker Series, Third Friday Mixers, the Graduate Business Golf and Bocce Tournament and has contributed to clubs and causes like CILSA, the Rowing Club, the Wine Festival, and the Graduate Business Golf Sponsorship.
