Update on BAR Task Force

Dear Saint Mary's Community Members,

We are writing to provide an update about the Business and Academic Resources (BAR) Task Force.  As you may recall from communications in the fall, this Board-initiated task force is aimed at enhancing the long-term financial sustainability of the College in light of our ongoing mission.

Since that time there was a very productive conversation about the task force between Academic Senate representatives and Trustees at the January Board of Trustees meeting, and as a result a small working group comprised of administrators, faculty, and trustees met to draft the charge and membership of the task force.

The draft charge was then shared with the Academic Senate, which facilitated a discussion about it on February 21. Several changes were made to the document as a result of that discussion. The revised draft was considered by the Board of Trustees at their retreat on February 23-24 and approved without changes. The final version of the charge and membership is attached.

As noted in the charge, the goal of the task force is to examine the factors that are critical to the long-term financial sustainability of Saint Mary’s and recommend strategies that will allow the College not only to remain academically competitive and financially strong but to thrive.  As part of its work the task force will develop a clear communication plan that spells out how it will provide updates about the work of the task force and how it will solicit input from various constituencies.  While the task force will be making recommendations to the administration, Academic Senate, and the Board of Trustees, it will not be a decision making body.  Decisions will be made through normal governance processes as specified in policy documents such as the Faculty Handbook.

The next step is to populate the task force. Once the members are in place we expect the task force to have its first meeting in mid-March and continue to meet on a monthly basis through May of 2019.

If you have any questions about the task force, you may contact us at dford@stmarys-ca.edu.

We look forward to working with you on this important initiative.
