Volleyball Earns Postseason Bid

The women’s volleyball team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, but fell to New Mexico State in its first-round game at UC Berkeley’s Haas Pavilion. Head coach Rob Browning expressed disappointment, but complimented his team for playing hard in every competition.

“This was a great season for Saint Mary’s volleyball — one of the best ever. It’s too bad we finished our season with a poor performance against New Mexico State,” he said. “The team everyone saw in that match is not the same team that beat so many great opponents throughout the year.”

The team ended the 2008 season with a 20–8 overall record. Saint Mary’s defeated four ranked opponents this season, including No. 13 San Diego, No. 19 Pepperdine, No. 19 Cal Poly, and No. 23 Santa Clara. The WCC was one of the top conferences in the country, and five of its teams earned bids to postseason play.

Megan Burton, Shannon Lowell and Kapua Kamana’o earned all-conference honors, and Chanteal Satele (pictured above) was named to the seven-player all-freshman list.

Browning said he will miss seniors Brittany Barker, Nikki Gonzalez, Taylor Groess, Lyndsey Parker and Erin Thompson, but added, “We expect to be strong again next year.”
