Academic Symposia 150th
Symposium I: The Catholic Intellectual Tradition
Wednesday, October 24, 2012
Bishop Marcelo Sanchez-Sorondo, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences will be the keynote speaker. An authoritative voice in Catholic higher education, especially from a church perspective larger than the confines of the American academy, Bishop Sanchez-Sorondo was recommended by Bishop Cummins. The College will also recognize him as our Montini Fellow of the academic year. The Montini Fellowship is an award granted by the Bishop John S. Cummins Institute for Catholic Thought, Culture and Action.
Symposium II: The Liberal Arts and the Common Good: Educating Citizens in the 21st Century
This event will address the future of the liberal arts’ perennial commitment to educating responsible, democratic citizens. The speakers will address the general theme from their own perspective. Students with a liberal arts education represent a stunningly large percentage of America’s leaders in virtually every field of endeavor. It is the most practical preparation for entering a world that is changing in ways we cannot foresee. Paradoxically, however, the demand for a narrower, career-focused education is increasing, distorting the qualities the make a liberal arts education so successful. How can a liberal arts education continue to meet society’s long-term needs for intellectual and democratic capital? How can it provide access to a more fulfilling life for students from groups who have historically been underserved by higher education? How should it prepare our workforce to function in a culturally diverse, globally interdependent, and technologically sophisticated world?
Symposium III: Lasallian Education in the 21st Century
On Tuesday, “The Living Lasallian Heritage” program will feature a panel of Brothers who will discuss how the Brothers adapt/change/respond to the times--serving the educational needs of youth and adult in the world today. Br. Alvaro will be the respondent. On Wednesday, the annual Academic Convocation will be held to honor Br. Alvaro Rodriquez Echeverria, Superior General of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He will speak on the mission of Lasallian education in the 21st Century.
