First Year Experience

As part of the first year experience a theme is selected to provide social and academic construct by which you will base your learning in and outside the classroom.

The 2017-18 theme, “Community”, encourages you to examine what it means to connect with others and how you can help create an inclusive environment, celebrating every person’s individuality.

Common Reading

Tattoos on the HeartThe 2017-2018 FYE common reading is Tattoos on the Heart by Gregory Boyle.  You will receive your copy of the book at your orientation.  If you are attending orientation in August, a book will be mailed to you in July.

We look forward to exploring the book with you upon your arrival at Weekend of Welcome. You will discuss the book with classmates living within your residence hall. These book discussions, facilitated by student leaders, model the Collegiate Seminar experience and act as an introduction to shared inquiry at Saint Mary's. You, the newest member of our Saint Mary's community, will be making inquiry come alive in the classroom!
