The Educational Technology Group is dedicated to advancing the use of technology in teaching, learning, research, and scholarship by exploring new technologies, disseminating the information it has acquired, supporting the work of colleagues, and assisting in assessing the benefits of that work.

“Advancement” refers to both a quantitative increase in use of new technologies and a qualitative expectation around how well those technologies are integrated into the academic side of the College. The group oversees the award of grants to faculty interested in incorporating technology into teaching and scholarship. The ETG has also supported faculty attendance at technology conferences (such as Educause and MacWorld), sponsored numerous workshops on web authoring, and hosted guest speakers on technology in teaching from neighboring institutions.

Primary activities include:

  • Exploration, through an examination of best practices at comparable institutions, identification and testing of new software and hardware, attending conferences and workshops, and reading relevant publications.
  • Development, through review of and funded support for faculty projects and working groups that would explore uses of technology in teaching, learning, research, or scholarship. Identify resources and award grants for faculty with computer requirements that exceed the average purchase ratio.
  • Evaluate grant submissions, identify conferences and workshops on technology in teaching, discuss emerging technologies and their application to teaching and scholarship, and generally be an advocate of or resource for the use of technology in teaching and scholarship
  • Dissemination, through sponsored presentations by members of the ETG’s steering committee, SMC "specialists," faculty using technology in innovative ways, and in particular those completing funded projects, and invited guest speakers. Identify sources of instruction, such as trainers, on-line subscriptions, CD-based tutorials, working groups, and formal courses of instruction. Support appropriate user groups for areas of special or collective interest.
  • Assessment, through cooperative arrangements with faculty receiving funded support for projects, needs assessment of the larger faculty community, and ongoing attention to the way technology is assessed in other institutions of higher education.
  • Goals:
    • Distinguish ourselves as a resource for faculty to explore new technology;
    • Promote ourselves/ enhance our visibility through Faculty Development;
    • Share what we do with a broader audience
