SALT Leaders work with community partner organizations throughout the Bay Area and serve as campus-based social action leaders.  

In 13 years, over 135 Student Leaders have fostered connections between SMC and the Bay Area, worked directly with the poor and marginalized, transformed themselves, and created a culture of service and social justice education at the college. The SALT Program is comprised of two cohorts: Campus Based and Community Based.  Read more below for cohort specific focus areas. Community and Campus SALT Leaders are paid through Federal Work Study (some non-FWS positions may be available).

Community SALT Leaders: Community based leaders work off campus at various organizations throughout the Bay Area supporting their social endeavors. Community based SALT Leaders are provided with a hands-on experience working directly with community members and site staff. SALT site placement issue areas have included:

  • Education
  • Hunger Relief Services
  • Aiding low-income residents in finding resources for food, health, and job skills
  • Services for Children and Women
  • Transitional & Affordable Housing Services
  • Working with and serving Senior Citizens

Campus SALT Leaders: Campus based leader promote awareness and change on the St. Mary’s College campus.  These leaders engage in social action endeavors through organizing and leading a variety of service projects on and off campus. All of the positions for campus leaders fall under the Campus SALT Leaders acronym H.E.L.P, which focues on the areas of Health, Environment, Learning/Education, and Poverty. Campus Leaders will plan and co-lead events around the following (and many more!):

  • Health Education (including campus collaborations for World AIDS Day)
  • Legacy Garden Service Projects
  • Tutoring and Mentoring
  • Food and Housing Accessibility 
  • Saturdays of Service (August, October & November 2014 and February-April 2015)

All applications for SALT leadership positions must be submitted by Wednesday, March 19, 2014.

Not sure if you can commit a year? We will also be searching for Program Coordinators who will help plan and coordinate events under the Campus H.E.L.P initiative. Applications for these roles will be available late April/early May.  Coordinators serve approximatley 10 hours a month or as their event/program requires.
