Best Practices for Internship Postings - Know the Law
The Career Development Center at Saint Mary’s College of California is aware that state and federal law or regulation may inform whether an internship can be paid or unpaid.
Please click on the link below for important information on the legality of unpaid internships.
It is the role of the employer to evaluate for itself the internships that it offers for compliance with these laws. The Career Development Center is not in a position to assess or verify this criteria and each employer is urged to carefully consider the opportunities that it is offering to ensure its compliance with such laws and regulations.
You Must Pay Your Interns: In keeping with labor law, we will not accept unpaid internships, except for non-profit organizations. All internships with for-profits must pay at least the minimum hourly wage. You are likely to get a better response if you state the actual hourly rate or wage-range in your posting.
Indicate how Flexible the Work Schedule Can Be: Students need to make sure they can work around their class schedule be Specific On Days/Hours
Categorize Jobs Appropriately: e.g. Sales, Marketing, Business Operations, Financial Services, HR, Public Relations, Computer Information Technology, Sciences, Consulting, Legal, Health Care, etc.
Provide thorough Internship/Job Descriptions & Qualifications: Including detailed descriptions and specific qualifications can help guarantee quality candidate responses.
Job Descriptions vs. Job Advertisement: Beyond the description, really sell the opportunity – e.g. professional development, special project work, mentoring, networking opportunities, attendance at staff meetings, industry exposure, flexible hours, etc.
Internships are opportunities for students that provide them with career-related training. These positions should expose students to professional development and mentorship opportunities. Internships may include some degree of general office assistance, but the Career Development Center (CDC) requires that internships give students a greater understanding of the organization and the industry through direct participation in its mission.
