Environmental Health and Safety
Body
Welcome to the Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) department website. Saint Mary's College of California is committed to protecting the environment and to providing a safe workplace for faculty, staff, and contractors through education, training, and consultation.

In response to the emergency temporary Cal/OSHA standard on COVID-19 infection prevention, the College established, implemented, and maintains an effective written COVID-19 Prevention Plan that includes:

  • Identifying and evaluating employee exposures to COVID-19 health hazards.
  • Implementing effective policies and procedures to correct unsafe and unhealthy conditions (such as safe physical distancing, modifying the workplace and staggering work schedules).
  • Providing and ensuring workers wear face coverings to prevent exposure in the workplace.
  • Provide effective training and instruction to employees on how COVID-19 is spread, infection prevention techniques, and information regarding COVID-19-related benefits that affected employees may be entitled to under applicable federal, state, or local laws.

Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response Plan:

Our Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response Plan can help guide protective actions against the flu, SARS-CoV-2 virus (causes Coronavirus respiratory disease 2019, known as COVID-19), or other infectious agents.  The Plan helps Saint Mary’s College of California stay abreast of guidance from federal, state and/or local health agencies, and consider how to incorporate those recommendations and resources into workplace-specific plans.

This SPCC Plan was prepared in accordance with the regulations of Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 112 (40 CFR 112).

Chemical Hygiene Plan:

Saint Mary’s College of California(College or SMC) has developed the Chemical Hygiene Plan to:

  • Assure that relevant health and safety considerations are included in laboratory work involving hazardous chemicals.
  • Describe procedures, equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), and work practices for protecting employees from the potential health and safety hazards associated with these chemicals.
  • Describe how health and safety information about hazardous chemicals and chemical mixtures will be provided to Saint Mary’s College laboratory employees, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

Comply with Cal/OSHA 8 CCR 5191, Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories.

Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP):

Saint Mary’s College of California will provide a safe and healthy work environment for employees. In order to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace, SMC has developed and implemented this IIPP, which applies to employees working at the College campuses.  Employees are expected to follow safety rules and established safe work practices, and to exercise caution in their work activities. If an unsafe condition arises, employees are to report the condition to their Supervisor immediately for correction.
