Saint Mary's Study Abroad Scholarships

Jeanine Shahna Fela Endowed Scholarship for Ireland
A special endowment scholarship for SMC students accepted to study at National University Galway, Ireland through the Lasallian Consortium program.  Students must have a minimum of 2.8 cumulative GPA with little to no previous study abroad experience.  Applications are due on March 14, 2014 to the Center for International Programs. SMC Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship is intended for students who meet the following criteria: Pell Grant recipient, minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, little to no previous study abroad experience, accepted to study abroad for a semester/year through a SMC, Exchange or Lasallian Consortium program. Applications are due on March 3, 2014. Download application here.

Diversity Abroad Scholarships/Grants

Foundation for Global Scholars
The mission of the Foundation for Global Scholars is to “create global citizens and leaders by assisting students in achieving their personal and professional goals of obtaining cultural and academic experiences throughout the world” Since its inception in 2006, the Foundation for Global Scholars has awarded $969,500 in 982 scholarships to students going abroad to 16 different countries. 

Go! Overseas
GO! Overseas is proud to support international education through scholarships available to students participating in study abroad programs. Scholarships are awarded each year. The scholarship is awarded based on the creativity and analytical thinking displayed through writing samples and/or video submissions.

Golden Key Scholarships and Awards
Golden Key is an internationally recognized, non-profit organization affiliated with over 400 universities throughout Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, The Bahamas and the United States. The Society’s mission is to enable members to realize their potential through the advancement of academics, leadership and service.

General Scholarships

Boren Awards and Scholarships
Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Fund for Education Abroad
FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships.  FEA has a funding amount of up to $10,000 and awards up to 10 scholarships per academic year.  

Institute for the International Education of Students
An independent not-for-profit founded in 1919, IIE is among the world’s largest and most experienced international education and training organizations. We are committed to delivering program excellence to a diverse range of participants, sponsors, and donors.  The program provider annually delegates approximately $1 million for student scholarships having varying qualifications.

Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training (MHIRT) Grant Program
These new grants support innovative programs that offer international research training opportunities to qualified undergraduate, graduate, and health profession students who are from health-disparities populations and/or who are underrepresented in basic science, biomedical, clinical, or behavioral health research career fields.

My Travel Bug Fellowship
My Travel Bug, Inc. is a non-profit organization promoting the educational benefits of international travel. They offer travel fellowships for U.S. citizens financially unable to travel. These fellowships provide stipends to top quality writers for trips overseas for 1, 2, or 3 months. All U.S. citizens over the age of 16, regardless of race, gender, or religion, may apply for a Travel Bug Fellowship. Winning fellows are required to write travelogues and take pictures of their trips. These stories, pictures, and videos are published on our website for the benefit of our readers.

National Security Education Program
Information on NSEP scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study in non-traditional regions, as well as institutional grants. Note that NSEP grants have a service obligation. See also NSEP's Guide to Study Abroad and Global Careers in Non-traditional Destinations at http://www.worldstudy.gov/

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships
The Rotary Foundation provides the largest single U.S. scholarship program for study abroad. Scholarships are available for all levels of study, including high school, undergraduate, and graduate as well as to alums and professionals. Generally not for use with study abroad programs sponsored by U.S. institutions. Recipients can also use the award to conduct research abroad. Application possible only through local Rotary Clubs. Deadlines (locally determined) may be as much as one and one-half years in advance. Website provides scholarship information and lists Rotary Clubs worldwide.

SR Education Group Study Abroad Scholarship
The award is for $2000, and a new scholarship is posted immediately after the current scholarship closes (approximately every three months); this ultimately means that a scholarship will always be available to your students.  Additionally, it is a general study abroad scholarship- not program specific, and we do not impose a minimum timeframe for the student’s length of travel. 

Study Abroad Italy Scholarship

SAI is pleased to offer scholarships to deserving students each academic year. These scholarships are open to all SAI participants who meet the eligibility requirements

The Benjamin A.Gilman International Scholarship Award
This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Award recipients receive up to $5,000. Sponsored by: U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Administered by: Institute of International Education (IIE).
Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 "Critical Need Language" Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000.

The Fund for International Service Learning
A non-profit organization that awards scholarships to students enrolled in or applying to international service-learning programs. FISL offers a scholarship in the amount of $500 that can be used for any aspect of the trip such as travel expenses, tuition, visas, clothing, and special equipment.

The U.S. National Commission for UNESCO Laura W. Bush Traveling Fellowship
Student applicants design a proposal to conduct brief work in a foreign country related to the mandate of UNESCO: using education; natural sciences; social and human sciences; culture; and/or communication and information to build strong ties among nations. The fellowship is intended for American college students who express an interest in international collaboration but have not yet been afforded many opportunities to travel abroad.

Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Scholarship
The Thomas R. Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship program provides funding to participants as they are prepared academically and professionally to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply.

Africa
CIEE International Study Programs (CIEE-ISP) Scholarships (South Africa)
Students who are participating in the Study Abroad program in South Africa may qualify for the CIEE Scholarship.  
In an effort to make study abroad opportunities available to the widest possible audience, CIEE offers scholarships each year to students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need.
Eligibility
Available to CIEE Study Center applicants from CIEE Member or CIEE Academic Consortium Member institutions only. CIEE Member institutions can be found here and CIEE Academic Consortium member institutions can be found here.

Asia
The Bridging Scholarship (Japan)
The Bridging Scholarship program awards scholarships to American students participating in study abroad programs in Japan. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships

Australia
Endeavour Awards
The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government’s internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for citizens of the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to undertake study, research and professional development abroad.

Europe
CIEE International Study Programs (CIEE-ISP) Scholarships
Students who are participating in the Study Abroad program in Sevilla, Spain may qualify for the CIEE Scholarship.  
In an effort to make study abroad opportunities available to the widest possible audience, CIEE offers scholarships each year to students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need.

Available to CIEE Study Center applicants from CIEE Member or CIEE Academic Consortium Member institutions only. CIEE Member institutions can be found here and CIEE Academic Consortium member institutions can be found here.

French Embassy Granted Scholarships
The French Embassy offers programs designed to help students pursue their studies in France at the undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate levels.

German Academic Exchange Service
(DAAD) offers Undergraduate Scholarships to highly qualified undergraduate students for study abroad, university language or summer courses, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany.

Jeanine Shahna Fela Endowed Scholarship for Ireland
A special endowment scholarship for SMC students only to study abroad in Ireland through one of the Lasallian Consortium programs in Galway.  Applications are due on October 15, 2011 to the Center for International Programs. Download application here.

National Italian American Foundation (NIAF)
A $5,000 award for two separate categories: Italian American Students who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements-open to any area of study and students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies, or a related field, who demonstrate outstanding potential & high academic achievements.

Walter Jensen Scholarship-American Association of Teachers of French
This scholarship is awarded to students who are pursuing a degree of teaching French.  Mr. Jensen will fund one $1500 scholarship per year to help a student pay for a semester or year’s study abroad.
