History of Art
Bachelor of Arts: History of Art
The SMC History of Art major is an interdisciplinary program that allows students to learn how to analyze works of visual art, from prehistory to the latter half of the twentieth century, in a historical context. As a humanities program, and Institutional Member of the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies, it combines the study of the history of art and architecture with coursework in archeology, cultural anthropology, religious studies and modern languages. Through the development of critical skills in writing and visual analysis, majors are preparing themselves graduate study in art history, curatorial studies or other related fields. The coursework in the history of art, presented alongside courses in archeology, anthropology, religious studies and modern languages, presents the rich tradition of art in the western world, while also inviting students to experience the artistic production of many other cultures.
