4-Year Degree and Teaching Credential Program

Earn Your Undergraduate Degree and Teaching Credential at Saint Mary's in just 4 years through our Single Subject Teaching Credential Integrated Pathway !

Our program allows you to earn a degree and a teaching credential in a single subject simultaneously in just four years. Designed to provide future teachers the necessary skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience, this comprehensive teaching program blends academic coursework with practical fieldwork. By the program's conclusion, graduates are fully prepared to inspire and educate the next generation, meeting the diverse needs of students and contributing meaningfully to the field of education.

Curriculum

Single Subject Teacher Education (SSTE), Undergraduate Credential

Undergraduates with a SSTE pathway added to their major will be fulfilling all the requirements for a BA or BS in addition to requirements to earn a single subject teaching credential.

Learning Outcomes

  • 1: DESIGN lessons and DELIVER instruction that is linguistically, culturally and developmentally appropriate to students.
  • 2: LEARN and DEVELOP effective methods for cultivating a caring, supportive, nurturing, and rigorous classroom community (within our teacher education classrooms and at school sites).
  • 3: USE a variety of formative and summative assessments to meet the needs of different learners, including student self-assessment and self-reflection as partners in teaching and learning.
  • 4: ENSURE that all students have full opportunities for academic success, without regard to ethnicity, race, gender, culture, social class, language or disability.
  • 5: DEMONSTRATE professional practice growth in partnership with school sites, communities, families, and students.
  • 6: DEMONSTRATE that you have met all of the Teacher Performance Expectations set by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

SSTE Pathway Requirements

Integrated SSTE students take the following coursework sequenced from sophomore through senior year:

  • Foundations of Secondary Educ (3 units)

This integrated pathway prepares you to earn your bachelor's degree and a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in four years. You graduate ready to teach in real classrooms and serve the needs of diverse students.

Middle School / High School Teacher
Teach your subject (English, math, science, etc.), manage a classroom, assess learning, and support student growth

Culturally Responsive Educator
Adapt lessons for multilingual learners and students with different cultural and learning needs so every student can access the material

Student Support & Intervention Specialist
Work with teachers and counselors to identify learning needs, provide accommodations, and support students’ social-emotional well-being

Academic Advisor / College & Career Readiness Coach
Help students set goals, meet requirements, and prepare for college, careers, and life after high school

 

Curriculum & Instructional Designer (entry)
Create lessons, activities, and assessments that align with standards and support literacy, inclusion, and engagement

After-School / Extended Learning Program Lead
Run tutoring, enrichment, and mentorship programs that give students academic and personal support beyond the school day

Education Advocate / Community Liaison
Connect students and families with school and community resources in areas like language support, wellness, and stability

Equity & Inclusion Coordinator (school site level, entry)
Support a positive school climate by helping staff expand access, address bias, and make all students feel seen and supported
