The MFA in Dance: Creative Practice is a 60-unit plan of study emphasizing four areas of focus: Choreography and Performance, Theoretical Studies, Somatic Studies, and Design and Production for Dance.  Candidates are expected to create a full evening work that embodies the choreographic voice of the individual and a written thesis/project report that documents the process and the final product.  The program offers a low-residency option. 

Required Courses (60 units)

Choreography and Performance (26 units)

  • Choreography (PerfA 390), 3 units/3 times, total 9 units
  • Dance Technique (Perfa 375), 1 unit/ 8 times, total 8 units
  • Production Practicum (Perfa 394), 3 units/3 times, total 9 units

Theoretical Studies (9 units required)

  • Seminar in Dance History (Perfa 380), 3 units
  • Critical Dance Pedagogy (Perfa 383), 3 units
  • Dance and Social Justice (Perfa 382), 3 units

Somatic Movement Studies (6 units)

  • Somatic Movement Seminar (Perfa 384), 3 units
  • Plus one of the following for 3 units:

          - Laban and Bartenieff Movement Studies (Perfa 386), 3 units

           - Somatic Movement Studies (Perfa 377), 1 unit/3 times, total 3 units

Design and Production for Dance (5 units required)

  • Design Methodologies (Perfa 300), 3 units
  • Lighting Design I (Perfa 310),  2 units

Electives for Creative Practice Students (8 units required)

  • Must include one additional Design and Production course (2 or 3 units)
  • Other Creative Practice elective choices include the following:
