The MFA in Dance: Creative Practice is a 60-unit plan of study emphasizing four areas of focus: Choreography and Performance, Theoretical Studies, Somatic Studies, and Design and Production for Dance.  Candidates are expected to create a full evening work that embodies the choreographic voice of the individual and a written thesis/project report that documents the process and the final product.  The program offers a low-residency option. 

Required Courses (60 units):

Choreography and Performance

  • Choreography, 3 units each, 3 times, total 9 units
  • Dance Technique, 1 unit each, total 8 units (or professional equivalency)
  • Production Practicum, 3 units, 3 times, total 9 units-as performer twice minimum, as crew one time minimum

Theory

  • Seminar in Dance History - a phenomenological view, 3 units
  • Dance and Performance Studies, 3 units
  • Dance and Social Justice, 3 units
  • Critical Dance Pedagogy, 3 units

 

Design and Production for Dance

  • Design Methodologies, 3 units
  • Lighting Design I, 2 units
  • Electives, 2-6 units

Somatic Movement Studies 3-6 units

  • Somatic Movement Seminar, 3 units
  • Plus from the following choices for 1 unit each (other from ISMETA may be approved by advisor):

Body Mind Centering, Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais Method, Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Dynamic Embodiment, Continuum, Authentic Movement

Research Methods 2 units
