The MFA in Dance: Creative Practice is a 60-unit plan of study emphasizing four areas of focus: Choreography and Performance, Theoretical Studies, Somatic Studies, and Design and Production for Dance.  Candidates are expected to create a full evening work that embodies the choreographic voice of the individual and a written thesis/project report that documents the process and the final product.  The program offers a low-residency option. 

Required Courses (60 units):

Choreography and Performance (26 units)

  • Choreography III, IV, V, 3 units each, total 9 units

  • Dance Technique, 8 units

  • Production Practicum, 3 units/3 times, total 9 units

Theoretical Studies  (12 Units: 6 units required, 6 units of electives)

Required Theory Courses (6 units)

  • Seminar in Dance History , 3 units
  • Critical Dance Pedagogy, 3 units

Theory Electives (6 units)

  • Dance and Performance Studies, 3 units
  • Dance and Social Justice, 3 units
  • Dance for the Camera, 3 units

Somatic Movement Studies (6 units)

  • Somatic Movement Seminar, 3 units
  • Plus 3 from the following 1 unit choices:

          Body Mind Centering, Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais Method,

          Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals,

          Dynamic Embodiment, Authentic Movement,

          or other from ISMETA may be approved by advisor

Design and Production for Dance, 5 units required, 2-6 units of electives
