In 2009 I was a Scholarhsip of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) Scholar and wrote a paper totiled "Tacking Tax Text" which I presented at the SOTL Presentation in May of 2009, and also at the SEBA Research Seminar in April of 2009. The paper is published in Designs for Learning: Exploring The Scholarship of Teaching and Leaning at Saint Mary’s College of California, Published by SOFIA: A Journal of Teaching, Learning and Visual Literacy, 2009 I attended the American Accounting Assoictaion Annual Meeting in New York City in August of 2009. Participated in Academic roundtable forum on financial accounting textbooks, sponsored by McGraw Hill, in NYC August 2, 2009 • November 14, 2008 attended, by invitation only, Educator Practitioner Forum – Pathway to Excellence, sponsored by the California Society of CPAs • October 23, 2008: Reviewed Phillips Libby Libby Fundamentals of Financial Accounting • November 7,8 will attend AACSB seminar • By invitation, attended a recruiters meeting at KPMG in San Francisco, with Deloitte, PWC and Ernst also in attendance. • Attended a two week International Association of Lasallian Universities intense formation leadership program in Rome Italy June 1-14, 2008 I was honored to serve as faculty advisor to the St Mary’s team of Cristina Cabrera, Daniel Carrillo, John Diaz, Rene Mendoza & Amy Romero in the KPMG/ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting) case competition and privileged to witness their presentation on Monday August 6th at the ALPFA conference in Orlando Florida. I have never been prouder of St Mary’s College than I was on Monday at their presentation. The St Mary’s team was one of 25 teams chosen to compete from universities and colleges around the country (including USC & UC Berkeley.) Our St. Mary’s students did an outstanding job in their presentation of a very difficult case and skillfully answered the questions from the judges who later said that they were very impressed with the team, giving them a 3rd place in their group, just 2 points behind USC. The judges commented on how amazed they were at how well St Mary’s did, given that this was the first time St. Mary’s entered the competition, whereas most other schools had competed for multiple years. Photos of the team follow. Virginia Smith Chair, Department of Accounting
