President’s Update on Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony

May 18, 2022

Dear Saint Mary’s Community,

After careful reflection and with a sincere interest to support our graduating students, Saint Mary’s Board of Trustees Chair Kevin Nagle has chosen not to speak at this year’s undergraduate Commencement ceremony.

In his note to me about his decision, he wrote:

"In the interest of avoiding distraction and allowing the Saint Mary’s community to celebrate the return of in-person Commencement ceremonies, I am writing to inform you that I will respectfully decline your invitation to speak at this year’s event. I would like to thank you for the invitation and wish all the graduates well as they take the next step in their lives."

Kevin was recommended by the Commencement Committee to give the Graduation Commencement address in May 2020 that was cancelled due to COVID-19. I asked Kevin to provide this year’s address because of his invaluable contributions to Saint Mary’s, his experiences building a successful business career, and his commitment to the Lasallian principle of service to others. While his presence will be missed, I am exceedingly grateful for his service to our community and respect his decision.

We look forward to welcoming our graduates and their families to campus and celebrating a joyous day together.

Best regards,

Richard Plumb, PhD
President
