Graduate Business Alumnus Explains Social Media's Impact on Marketing

July 16, 2011

Saturday, July 16, 2011. How do you use Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Loopt, Square, Digg, ning, grouply and bitly to strengthen your brand? How is marketing and advertising changing?

These were the questions that were answered by Saint Mary's College MBA alumnus, Bill Orr, executive vice president for the Racepoint Group. Orr has nearly two decades of experience directing marketing and communications programs for eBay, Mattel, Hasbro, LeapFrog, Midway Games, Hewlett Packard Company, Philips, Sega of America, LucasArts, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, and Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream. He gave a roomful of graduate business students and alumni an overview of the various social media channels and showed case studies on how important social media can be in impacting a corporation's reputation. "Organizations need a digital customer strategy - web 3.0 - to target a heavily mobile society with instant communication in their hands," said Orr.

He explained that although corporate websites are necessary, they are "not a conversation. A website is a glorified ad." And he asked: "Why would we concentrate our attention on building a website if the conversations about your product are going on in other social media channels, such as Digg? "We are living in a recommendation-based society. Twitter is the new press release," Orr said.

The Saturday half-day workshop/practica is part of a bimonthly series of professional development lectures that are available to Saint Mary's College graduate business students and alumni. To view the video of the presentation, click here.
