Men’s Soccer Team Claims West Coast Conference Victory

“Today wasn’t easy. Gonzaga is a good team,” said men’s soccer coach Adam Cooper. He acknowledged that the opposition Bulldogs gave everything they had as they tried to beat the undefeated Gaels, but once again, the Gaels proved victorious—not only winning the game, but sealing the deal as winners of the coveted title of 2018 Champions of the West Coast Conference.

With 16 straight victories and zero losses, the men’s soccer team represents the epitome of teamwork, and a mental and physical toughness that is at the core of its outstanding work ethic. “For the guys to come away with all wins tells you how tough they are, mentally and physically,” said Cooper. “They have done an amazing job of dealing with everything that has been thrown at them this year. And still, they show up every day and work hard for each other.”

Coach Cooper also spoke about their “village” of success and the many people that contributed to the team’s winning season. “It takes an army to win a championship. It takes the players, coaches, administrators, athletic trainers, professors, support staff, and more,” he added. As the Gaels prepare for the next level of play—the NCAA tournament—the army of supporters will be with them every step of the way.

Sunday’s match welcomed an impressive crowd of fans adorned with Gael gear and an indefatigable spirit. From the start of the game to the final blow of the whistle at the 90th minute, the cheers from the fans were electric. Student drummers banged out rhythmic patterns to augment the spirited yells of “Go Gaels” and “You’ve got this, team!” A coach from the San Ramon Mustang Youth Soccer Club was overhead talking to his Under 10 players, explaining the strategy behind some of the moves witnessed on field. One boy in particular was heard saying, “I want to play for Saint Mary’s when I grow up.”

One of the most poignant moments was the pre-game senior recognition ceremony. Midfielder Stephen Dougherty ’19, the only senior on the team, was acknowledged and celebrated for his many contributions and leadership on the team. Joined by his parents, grandparents, and a host of family members on the field, Doughtery received a standing ovation for a job well done.

Throughout the match, the Gaels and Bulldogs were often toe-to-toe on the ball, but SMC displayed its dominance and maintained a strong defense and an equally dominating offense. With the team’s multiple shots on goal, fans knew that it was only a matter of time before the winning goal would be made. And in true Gael fashion, it was a stunning goal shot by forward Jake Rudel ’20.

“Our guys do the best they can to represent the program with integrity, grit, and hard work,” said Cooper. “Seeing their faces after winning the championship confirms that anything is possible with this group of men.” He added that when you’re a top-rated team in the country, you become a target, and they want to be the team that beats Saint Mary’s. Looking at their undefeated winning season, beating the Gaels is going to be tough for whomever they face in the NCAA tournament.

Coach Cooper chuckled when asked if any of the players have pre-game superstitions or rituals they use for good luck. “Every guy has his own superstition, some of which are pretty funny. But I’m going to keep them private,” said Cooper with a laugh.

The Gaels have one league game remaining on their schedule against Portland. Next week the team will find out who they will face in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Go Gaels!
