SMC and MDUSD Teacher Residency Program
This year, SMC has partnered with Mount Diablo Unified School District to develop a Teacher Residency program. Prospective educators will have the opportunity to combine their coursework with a yearlong classroom apprenticeship, giving them valuable hands-on experience that will help them ground their education.
The goal of the program is to provide participants with the support needed to thrive in their environment as they work towards earning their teaching credential. Students will be guided by Mentor Teachers three days per week, and will work as substitute teachers for the other two. Resident teachers will receive substitute teaching income, as well as a stipend to assist with living expenses for the year. In addition to all of this, Resident Teachers will also be given priority during the hiring process for MDUSD.
Participants can choose from a number of credentials to earn: a Multiple Subject Credential, a Single Subject Credential, an Education Specialist (Special Education) Credential - Mild/Moderate, a Multiple Subject + Bilingual Authorization in Spanish, and an Education Specialist + Bilingual Authorization in Spanish. Applicants who are not offered a position as a Resident Teacher may still be admitted to Saint Mary’s College, and pursue a credential as a traditional student.
