STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS – Spring 2014

Elliott Battle (Mathematics and Physics) will receive the SOS Arthur S. Campbell Commencement Award.  Elliott will matriculate to Washington University in St. Louis to pursue a degree in computer science.

Jessica Axelrod (Biology) presented a poster and podium talk at the American Association of Physical Anthropologists in Calgary.  The title was, "Mycobacterium tuberculosis in prehistoric California: A review of evidence and paleoepidemiological comparisons of impacted and related populations."  Jessica presented with one of the co-authors who is a student from UC Berkeley.

Shelby Solomon (Psychology) presented a poster titled "The effect of body modifications and resume quality on perceived job competency" this past weekend at the 94th annual convention of the Western Psychological Association.  Her poster on her next study in this series has been accepted to the American Psychological Association's 122nd annual convention this coming August in Washington DC.

The student team of Elliot Battle, Marco Avalos, John Spalluzzi, Anthony Braddick, and Katy Duran, working under the guidance of Prof. Weiwei Pan (Mathematics and Computer Science) produced an iPhone application that will be used by patrons of the Lindsay Wildlife Museum.  The beta-version of the App was presented at Lindsay Wildlife Museum this past Saturday morning, with directors and board members of the museum in attendance.  Look for a full release of the App in late May.  This work was supported by a SENCER-ISE grant secured by Steve Bachofer.  The purpose of SENCER-ISE program is "to explore and evaluate ways to support sustainable partnerships between informal science and higher education professionals around issues of civic consequence." Karen Trang (Biochemistry) was awarded a scholarship from the local chapter of the American Association of University Women.

A large number of Psychology students have been accepted to a wide range of graduate programs, including:

Ashleigh Landau into a PhD program in Social/Personality Psychology at the University of Oregon;

DeVonna Jacobs into the PsyD program in Clinical Psychology at the Wright Institute;

Kelly Healy into the Law Program at the University of California School of Law;

Devyn Cotter into the graduate program in Neuroscience and Translational Medicine at Queen Mary University in London;

Katie Burnett into the master's program in Criminal Justice at Sacramento State University;

Stephanie Artesi into the master's program in Counseling with an emphasis in School Counseling at Sonoma State University;

Elise Tran into the master's program in Applied Behavior Analysis at the University of Washington;

Brianna Lampe into the master's program in Speech Therapy at the University of the Pacific.
