COVID-19 Close Contact Guidance

Dear Saint Mary’s Community,

We have received a number of questions about what to do in the event you have come into contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Listed below is the latest guidance from Contra Costa Health Services

. If you test positive for COVID-19, have previously tested positive and not reported it, or have been exposed to someone who has tested positive, report it here. To get tested, visit these County resources or see the list below for sites near Saint Mary’s. 

People who are up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccinations (have received a booster or are not yet eligible):

People who are fully vaccinated and have received a booster and people who are fully vaccinated but aren’t yet eligible to receive a booster (click here for booster eligibility timeline) do not need to stay home (quarantine). Follow these instructions:

  • Get tested on day 5 after being exposed to someone with COVID-19
    • If the test is positive, follow isolation instructions
    • If you are a student living on campus, you may contact the Health and Wellness Center to receive a PCR test on day 5 after being exposed.
    • If asymptomatic, you don't need to stay home
  • Wear a well-fitting mask around others for 10 days, especially indoors
  • If you develop symptoms, get tested right away and stay home


People who are not up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccinations (have not gotten a booster dose despite being eligible):

  • Stay home for at least 5 days after your last contact with a person who has COVID-19
  • Get tested on day 5 
    • If you have no symptoms AND a test taken on day 5 or later is negative: quarantine can end on day 6 
    • If you do not get tested AND do not have symptoms: quarantine can end on day 11 
    • If you test positive or develop symptoms: stay home for 10 days from your positive test or until your symptoms are getting better, following isolation instructions
  • If you are a student living on campus, you may contact the Health and Wellness Center to receive a PCR test on day 5 after being exposed.

People who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated: 

  • Stay home for at least 5 days after your last contact with a person who has COVID-19
  • Get tested on day 5 
    • If you have no symptoms AND a test taken on day 5 or later is negative: quarantine can end on day 6 
    • If you do not get tested AND do not have symptoms: quarantine can end on day 11 
    • If you test positive or develop symptoms: stay home for 10 days from your positive test or until your symptoms are getting better, following isolation instructions
