Lasallian Institute for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging: July 24-29, 2022

Saint Mary’s College is excited to announce the inaugural Lasallian Institute for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, hosted here in Moraga, California. Like the other regional formation programs, this Institute is open to all Lasallian educators.


The goals of the Institute are to deepen our understanding of the why and how of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), ground this work within our Lasallian charism, cultivate both personal and professional practices for advancing equity, and join other Lasallians in this critical human pursuit towards faith, justice, peace, and love.  

We believe that the question, “What does it mean to be a Lasallian Catholic school in the 21st century?” must be answered in part with a commitment to affirming each person and holding space for courageous conversations, always with an aim towards belonging and fullness. This Institute is intended to be a brave and sacred place for every participant, and the facilitators, to continue their own work as Lasallian educators. 

Institute Overview

The Institute is an integrated, intentional, and participatory week including exploration of key content, group work, individual reflection, and case study application. Additionally, prior to the Institute, participants will identify personal projects which they will workshop during the Institute and implement after returning home. Participants will receive two mentoring sessions in fall 2022.

In the spirit of Lasallian gatherings, the Institute also has ample time for camaraderie, hospitality, and getting to know our ministries. The Institute is designed to blend group engagement, individual learning, and a theory-to-practice approach to advancing equity, inclusion, and belonging.


  • Sunday, July 24: Check in to housing, enjoy dinner and an opening session with prayer, introductions of the individuals and teams, and social hour.
  • Monday-Tuesday, July 25-26: 
    • The mornings begin with prayer, followed by interactive sessions. The first is grounded in Lasallian charism and its alignment with equity and inclusion. We are calling these our “Lasallian Anchors.” The second focuses on key knowledge and practices related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
    • After lunch, the afternoons are dedicated to case study workshops and individual projects in small teams and with a mentor. 
    • Take a break to relax and rejuvenate, use the rec center, walk, socialize, nap
    • After dinner, participants will engage in group synthesis, personal reflection about the day, closing prayer, and social time.
  • Wednesday, July 27: Wednesday morning will follow the format of Monday and Tuesdays mornings. The afternoon and evening are self-directed. Relax on campus or explore the Bay Area.
  • Thursday, July 28: This day will follow the flow of Monday and Tuesday
  • Friday, July 29: Participants will check out of housing and gather for a final closing session. We will end by noon.


We aim to make the Institute as affordable as possible by seeking funding and asking for a registration fee of $1200/person. The fee includes all but one meal, lodging, materials, and facilitation. We may be able to assist with transportation from OAK and SFO airports; this will be determined as planning continues. Participants who are local to Saint Mary's may choose to commute as long as they commit to the full schedule of events. The fee without housing is $850.

Participant Update, June 9, 2022

If you have submitted your payment for the Institute, thank you. For those who have not, here is the link. Please submit payment by Friday, June 10, or reach out to Jennifer.


  • Check-in begins on Sunday, 7/24 at 2:30pm; the program begins at 4pm. If you need to arrive early, just let me know.
  • The Institute concludes at Noon on 7/29. If possible arrange for flights after 2pm; if that's not possible, we understand.
  • Traveling from OAK or SFO takes just about the same time (SFO is a little further and definitely takes longer if traveling to/from SFO during rush hours). Choose your flights based on timing and costs.
  • We are unable to assist with airport transit for Sunday's arrival. Here are three options from either airport: 
    • BART to Orinda and then Lyft/Uber to campus
    • Lyft/Uber the entire way
    • Arrange for a shuttle


  • Participants will be staying on campus, in air-conditioned suites, in single rooms, with a shared bath (one bathroom for 2 people). Linens are provided.
  • If you plan to stay off-campus, please know that our program will end at 8:30pm most days. (The agenda is above.) If you will be commuting, please be ready to remain for the evening portions.
