And the winner is....
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Banned Books survey during the week of September 21-28, 2014. We have 102 total respondents who checked off all the banned or challenged books that they have read (so far!). One person even had a write-in candidate-- The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.
But the book that had the highest total was The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, followed by Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and George Orwell's 1984. All the titles listed had been read by someone, so there were no zeroes in the list. For the full list of books and tallies, feel free to enjoy the excel spreadsheet.
When you choose to read a book, you do not always choose it because it is controversial (although that does not hurt). Often you want to read it because you have heard that it is an interesting story, or you admire the other writings of an author. Or you accidentally pick a title up and just start reading. For whatever reason, congratulations-- you are one of the literate, the curious, the intelligent, and the thoughtful. Keep up the good work.
